Oil Pulling

I was out with a friend recently and we were exchanging natural beauty tips when she mentioned oil

pulling. Naturally, (no pun intended) my interest peaked as I had never heard of this method. Further research revealed a very interesting oral care method.

Oil pulling or oil swishing is an Ayurvedic remedy that involves using oil (coconut-highly recommended, sesame or sunflower to rinse your mouth. This method "pulls" toxins from your mouth as they get trapped in the oil. Oil pulling works on the root cause of oral problems including halitosis, gingivitis and plaque. Research has shown that coconut oil is the only oil used in oil pulling that stops the growth of Streptococcus bacteria.

Rinse your mouth with 1 tablespoon of oil, in the morning and on an empty stomach. Oils with colour such as olive and avocado are not effective and can stain teeth.

Swish your mouth with the oil for 20 minutes (yes, 20 minutes) and then spit out your rinse, preferably in the garbage as coconut oil can clog drains. Some recommend rinsing the mouth with sea salt before brushing as normal.

Do this every morning to help remove toxins from your mouth and improve your overall oral care and health.

Note: The 20 minute rinse is easy to do first thing in the morning when you wake up and don't have to talk to anyone or try it when you are taking a shower.
If you brush with pure baking soda, you can skip the sea salt step, as baking soda is a salt.

Let me know what you think.
